Think about the last time you visited a site that has not been updated for a few months. It does not inspire much confidence, does it? A fresh and regular stream of content indicates that a site is still alive and relevant.

Slip up and you will fall into irrelevancy. Your content has a compound effect. So, make sure you are delivering in quality and quantity as well.
